Top 10 Spiritual Novels

Posted by Goddess Leonie on June 27th, 2011. Filed under: Review Goddess.

Hola gorgeous Goddesses!

I heart me some books that are gorgeous stories AND spiritual teachers all at once. Here are my double kisses like ze French do recommendos…

1. The Red Tent – Anita Diamant

When me and Mr Soul Hunk went to the CalmBirth workshop, our teacher was sharing about how women need a dark, safe, sacred space to give birth in.

Chris said: You mean like a red tent right? Women need the red tent to give birth!

(The Red Tent is an ancient tradition of women who have their menstrual moontime staying in a red tent – a place of women’s wisdom.)

And our teacher gaped at him.

“You’ve read The Red Tent?” she asked.

Usually this book is considered a woman’s read.

“Oh yes! It’s probably the best book I’ve ever read!” he replied.

So yus. This book really is that good.

When I finished reading it, I put my head on the table and cried for a long, long time. This book utterly opens you up to the depth, width, fullness, extremity of life. Full full full.

2. The Mists of Avalon – Marion Zimmer Bradley

If you’re wanting to delve more into Avalon or the Goddess tradition, this is the book to do it with.

It’s kinda historical, kinda mythical {depending on what you believe in}.

But once you’ve met Morgaine? Your life is changed.

3. Shirley Maclaine – The Camino

I didn’t realise Shirley Maclaine – that gorgeous flame-haired actress – was intensely spiritual. Then I read this scrumptious book and realised just what a gorgeous, intuitive soul she is.

This is her diary of walking the Camino trail in Europe, and the spiritual awakenings she has while doing it.

Miraculous.

4. Kate Forsyth – The Witches of Eileanan series

Can I just warn you up front that this is not rated for delicate petals? If you are super sensitive like me, think about whether you want to read this fantasy series or not. I decided it would be worth it, and skimmed over the parts that were too intense for me.

Now that warning is out of the way – these books really are beautifully written, and evoke memories of what it would be like to be a woman of the ancient, herbal, healing ways again.

5. Mutant Message down Under – Marlo Morgan

This is the story of an American woman who goes walkabout with an Australian Aboriginal tribe through the Outback, and witnesses their healing and intuitive gifts. There is debate about whether this story happened or not. I do believe in the miracles that happen in this book… it really is a beautiful story about the wisdom of the Australian Aboriginal people.

6. Way of the Peaceful Warrior – Dan Millman

I remember reading this book for the first time. There is a particular moment in there that stands out as being kind of an awakening about death for me – about how we really are all going to be okay.

But anyways. I digress. I think this novel is really wonderful – and is especially good for menfolk. My Dad-in-law loves it!

7. The Celestine Prophecy – James Redfield

And I’m finishing with the book that started it all for me. When I was 17, my dorm headmistress at boarding school gave me this book. Funnily enough – I saw her again just a couple of weeks ago after ten years apart. She is still luminous. We still love to talk about spirit. And synchronicity abounds – she was re-reading this book when we talked.

This book was the first spiritual book I read, and it opened a world for me.

Yup… That’s seven books. I want to make the remaining three based off your recommendations!

Comments Circle: 64 Gorgeous Goddess Comments to Top 10 Spiritual Novels

  1. Loran

Daughters of Copperwoman by Anne Cameron

Doorways and Dreamfields by Angi Sullivan

  2. Jo

I love Starhawk’s The Fifth Sacred Thing set in a futuristic San Francisco where peace, love and earth-honoring people have set up a utopian world away from the rest of the world that is collapsing thanks to environmental degradation. It’s passionate, spiritual and sexy!

  3. Nolwenn

I’ve read “the Celestine Prophecy” when I was around 15, i remember it very well. At that time, I was the creator and administrator of a pretty big website and forum around “White Magic” and spirituality and lots of people told me to read it. It all began, really began, with it. Helped me understand that I am not that crazy, and not alone either.

“The Mist of Avalon” is so awesome. Sometimes I wonder if I was not there in a past life, somehow.

I have to read “The red tent”, seems very powerful and heard only good things about it.

I have to check the few books I don’t know in your list (#4 and #5).

    Thanks for sharing !

  4. Molly

Women Who Run With the Wolves: Clarissa Estes
This book changed my LIFE. :) <3

  5. Kristen

Love your selections!! The Red Tent and The Peaceful Warrior are two of my favourites as well!

Other favourite spiritual books of mine: Women who Run with the Wolves (how could it not be?!); The Alchemist; Many Lives, Many Masters; Radical Acceptance; and Deborah, Golda & Me.

  6. Heather

The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho. The boy’s journey and encouragement to follow his dreams where ever they may lead, and to listen to his heart – one of the most connecting stories I’ve ever read.

I also love the way Paulo Coelho tells the stories in all his books, there’s a lyrical flow to the way the stories pour out.

  7. Terry Clavelli

I will take your recommendations and start reading the books this summer! My favorites are
Anam Cara by John O’Donohue (my life-changer)
Crossing to Avalon by Jean Shinoda Bolen
Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss

    Enjoy!

  8. C Mara Lee

The Year The Horses Came; If You Meet The Buddha on the Road, Kill Him; Handbook to Higher Consciousness

I’ve only read Celestine off your list – summer reading, here I come.

  9. Loes

From your list, I’ve only read The Celestine Phrophecy, and I loved it! Will check out the other books.

The Alchemist is still one of my all time favorites. And I absolutely fell in love with the Boudica series by Manda Scott. Based on true historical events, these novels paint a beautiful picture about healers and dreamers and the thin veil between our world and that of our ancestors (I skimmed over the fighting scenes). Highly recommended!

  10. Freyja

What a lovely choice, I’ve read #7 and am about to order The Red Tent on Kindle.

  11. Leigh

The red tent hits me in the gut every time I read it. I’ve owned at least three copies — through various moves I’ve misplaced it and purchased another.

Jeanette Winterson is another writer who has the same effect on me. Lighthousekeeping is one of my all-time favorite books.

Am itching to check out some of the other books on your list.

  12. Mandy

Oooo…that is a beautiful list. Have just reserved a couple of those, that I haven’t read, at my local library. Love ‘Way of the Peacefull Warrior’ and definitely agree that ‘Women who run with wolves’ needs to be added to the list.

  13. Ellie Di

I’m gonna be the most cliched person in the whole world right now, but I don’t care. “Eat, Pray, Love” changed my spiritual life right from the preface, and I’m still working on understanding all the shifts it brought to me. The journey I’m on now is new and scary, but I know it’s the right one.

  14. Ellie Di

Oh! I thought of another one. :3 It’s not a novel proper, but “The Body Sacred” by Dianne Sylvan is a beautiful book on women’s body image through a Divine Feminine lens. I read it once a year, and I’ve taken so many wonderful lessons from it. (And I buy it for people!)

  15. Hayden Tompkins

For herbal lore and wisdom, I love love love The Earth’s Children series by Jean M. Auel. (First book, but not the best book, is “Clan of The Cave Bear”.

The most moving and spiritual book I have ever read is Viktor Frankl’s “Man Search for Meaning”. He was a holocaust survivor and there is so much depth of experience and wisdom in this book. (Once you get past the beginning…he was a psychologist and talks method at the beginning.)

  16. Raven

Some of my absolute favorite books are on this list!!! Mists is a dear old friend, as is The Red Tent. I adore that your hubby read it and loved it too.

Dance of the Dissident Daughter by Sue Monk Kidd would be my recommendation & I agree with the others who said The Fifth Sacred Thing & Women Who Run With Wolves. Both are amazing. I would also highly recommend you read The Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Marillier & The Chronicles of the Cheysuli by Jennifer Roberson. Both are about magic and shapeshifting and harmony with the universe.

  17. Anke

I agree with Jo: Starhawk’s “The Fifth Sacred Thing” is one of the best spiritual books, I ever layed my hand on. And, of course, the “Mist of Avalon”!!
Another book I really enjoyed is “The Lightbearer” by Donna Gillespie!
Thank you for the other sugesstion, I need to check them out

  18. Laura

Hands down – “Illusions: Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah” by Richard Bach came to me at a time when I was struggling with the way I was raised and the path I had been placed upon. Come to think of it, “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” was right in there too.

  19. Grace

It was a book by Shirley Maclaine (Out On a Limb) that first introduced me to Eastern thought. I was 16 and found it on my father’s bookshelf. It had a colored chart of the chakras and I just thought it looked interesting!

“The Rent Tent” is a beautiful novel.

  20. bobbie

“The Tao of Pooh” by Benjamin Hoff is my hands down favorite… closely followed by “The Te of Piglet” by B. Hoff…

  21. ingrid {my peacetree}

oh yes, the alchemist by paulo coehlo.
and winnie the pooh, because it teaches all the most lovely of lessons – friendship, happiness, beauty in the world, kindness.

thanks for sharing all these, leonie. i’m looking forward to enlightening my soul!

  22. Jessica

    Favourite spiritual novels:

The Last Light of the Sun by Guy Gavriel Kay (pretty much all of his novels have a beautiful spiritual yearning and tension to them)

Carpe Jugulum by Terry Pratchett (I just picked one example–I find most of his books have very profound spiritual lessons in between all the hilarity)

The Rent Tent and Mists are such beautiful books. I reread them every couple years and always find it a re-grounding process.

  23. Angela

I have just read a kindle book by Niamh Clune and love it. Her novel Orange Petals in a Storm is so amazing as it brings the inspiration, images and feminine wisdom from the inner world of the soul into the every day life of the young heroine. I could not put it down and can’t wait for the next book. I am reading it again and getting more and more out of it.

  24. shelle

Love yourself, live your spirit by Sonia Choquette
or Soul Lesson and Soul Purpose by Sonia Choquette

The four Agreements by d.m. ruiz
Start where you are by pema chodron

something by Deepak Chopra maybe The Seven Spiritual Laws for parents which is my favorite

  25. Meg

    Yes to tao of pooh…
    would also like to add
    Einsteins Dreams by Alan lightman
it is a short book chock full of metaphysical short stories, that crack open your mind and spirit and look to the possibilities

  26. Raven Moon Magic

I see ‘Ellie Di’ feels she needs to apologise for loving Eat Pray Love, it is just as important to me as all these others, I read it when I was going thru my breakdown/breakthru and I just loved it, Iread it sooo slowly so I could absorb everything, a very important book about following your feelings and not living a life that feels so wrong xxx

For me the most important book I have ever read is ‘conversations with god’ it has help me to relax in my life and just experience every little bit instead of rushing past the details constantly hunting a goal, I love this book and have brought so many copies and given them away. so for me this answers every question you ever had, and there are no answers!! love it xxx

    Love you too Leonie xxx

    sheree
    xxx

  27. Asha

I love your list! I have to say though, “The Forest House” has always been much dearer to my heart than “The Mists of Avalon” when it comes to the Avalon books.

I agree with those who say add “Clan of the Cave Bear” series and “Women Who Run With the Wolves”! Very different, but both touched me in profound ways.

Another gorgeous (though graphically sexual and violent at times) series (3 trilogies so far) is Jacqueline Carey’s “Kushiel’s Legacy”.

    <3

  28. Dianne Sylvan

My favorite novel of all time is Strands of Starlight by Gael Baudino. It’s kind of depressing, but it’s also one of the most powerful novels I’ve ever read about Goddess religion. It’s about a woman’s journey of transformation from rape victim to healer, and involves Elves and Witches who worship an immanent Goddess. Baudino’s writing changed the way I write, and the story changed the way I saw Divinity. It’s a little hard to find because it’s an out of print mass-market paperback, but if you can find it, it’s incredible.

  29. Mary

    Add to your list:
    1. The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho
    2. Illusions: Adventures of the Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach
    3. Siddhartha by Herman Hesse

  30. Rachel @ Suburban Yogini

I read the Mists of Avalon when I was 14 and it changed my life! Maybe it is time to read it again.

  31. ellen gradman

The Red Tent and Mists of Avalon are two of my all time favorite books!!
Another amazing one albeit maybe not “spiritual” is; The Girl with the Pearl Earring. The CLan of the Cave Bear, was also one of the most powerful books I have ever read!

  32. Elaine H

    Elli D,

EPL started me on my midlife spiritual journey. I saw the movie first, then read the book. The book is so much better.

I have not read any of the other books recommended however I will start one of them very soon. I prefer to listen to books so I will have to see what my library has

    :)

  33. Kimocean

What a great topic, thanks Leonie! I haven’t had time to read all the comments (I will be coming back to add some of these to my to be read list!) but I didn’t see Televisionary Oracle by Rob Brezsny in my quick scan. I love how it celebrates pleasure, sexuality and sensuality and links them to the deeper themes of spiritual exploration. I’d also second Crossing to Avalon by Jean Shinoda Bolen. It’s not a book that I see get much attention but dropped into my hand at a used book store years ago and I am very thankful that it did.

  34. Kendra B

I’m also an Eat Pray Love fan!! I laughed when Raven Moon Magic mentioned reading it soooo slowly, I did the same thing! It started me on an incredible journey that I’m still on!!

  35. Sally

    Thanks Leonie!

I’ve just started a ‘To Read’ list and added a lot of these to it. Have read The Red Tent (Amazing!!!) and the Witches of Eileanan Series (Loved them)

  36. Caroline

DITTO to Jeannette Winterson’s Lighthousekeeping – her writing in and of itself is a spiritual journey, the story is amazing too – i read it with my most recent love and i think it helped catalyze our relationship…
YES Rob Breszny (though i like his Pronoia book better)
ALSO Eat Pray Love – i read it in Turkey on my way to India after spending some months in Spain/France/the netherlands and then went to Bali afterwards. Perfect! Loved it.

  37. Kyeli

I’m gonna back up Ellie and agree with “Eat, Pray, Love” – it rocked my world.

Another one that’s got me in tears with laughter and joy and understanding is “Rolling Around Heaven” by Jessica Maxwell. I haven’t finished it yet, but OMG it is AWESOME.

I added yours to my list for 2012 (after my book-buying ban is over). Yay!

  38. LeAnn

I’m so glad you ranked The Red Tent #1! I LOVED that book!

    I have 3 others I would add:

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Dakota: A Spiritual Geography by Kathleen Norris

    Cloister Walk by Kathleen Norris

  39. Tia

Thank you so much for sharing Leonie! I haven’t read The Red Tent yet but I just popped over to the library website and put a request in for it. I saw a lot of people liked Eat, Pray, Love so I’m going to check that out too. I have so many favorites, too many to list. Some of them are:
Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss
The Power of Infinite Love & Gratitude by Dr. Darren Weissman
A New Earth by Eckhard Tolle
Soul Lessons and Soul Purpose by Sonia Choquette
Oh, and The Map by Colette Baron-Reid

  40. Emily

Also by Paulo Coelho and more directly related to women and goddesses is The Witch of Portobello. I read it with my jaw dropped open the entire time and tears of joy running down my cheeks!

What a wonderful topic. I wrote so many books down. Thank you!

  41. emilykyoko

How delightful! Here are some more beautiful novels to add to the list:

Stories of Eva Luna – Isabel Allende
    Paula – Isabel Allende
The Little Prince – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Songs of Solomon – Toni Morrison
Grace and Grit – Ken Wilber

  42. Prime

    Hello fellow goddesses:

This post is a god(dess) send! I’ve been looking for book recommendations that will help me in my goddess spirituality quest and Leonie’s book list combined with recommendations from the commenters is really helpful. Im def [putting the following in my Amazon wish list: Red Tent, Crossing to Avalon, Women who Run with Wolves, Cloisterwalk

And oh, while I’m no big fan of Eat Pray Love, I have to acknwledge the fact that the book is the perfect read for women (most of whom I noticed are in the 30 to 40 age group) who love to travel on their own as part of their spiritual practice.

  43. Cerise

My favourite spiritual novel is “Now is the time to open your heart” by Alice Walker. I got the audio-book and I do not know how often I have listened to it whil knitting…Maybe 50 times?

  44. Mary Dean

WWRWTW by CPEstes changed my life! Loved it.

    Great site!

  45. Nina

Love your list! Love you! Some of my spiritual novel faves are Chocolat by Joanne Harris (it wasn’t just a sexy and amazing movie!), The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (always open to discovery and healing), The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac (love those beat poets and the notion of a simple life). xo

  46. Sara Shantii

Thank you, I was searching for new books to read during this summer! :) I love your list. Already read MZ Bradley ♥
    Sara

  47. Lady

My top three off the top of my head

Return of the Bird Tribes by Ken Carey
Women Who Run with Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Book of Shadows by Phyllis Currott

Oh and maybe Alice in Wonderland !!

  48. Amanda aka AbsintheDragonfly

The Clan of the Cave Bear series, The Alchemist, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

  49. michele

I’m glad Jonathan Livingston Seagull and Illusions were mentioned.
    I would also add:

Huna: Ancient Hawaiian Secrets for Modern Living
    (Serge Kahili King)
    The Power of Intention
    (Wayne Dyer)
The Artists Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity
    (Julia Cameron)

  50. Ember

I think “Ishmael” by Daniel Quin and “The four agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz are really great reads Ishmael blew my mind and the four agreements made me realize some things i needed to change in my life.

  51. Elisa

My top 3 are by Abraham-Hicks (and they are not novels, but my top spiritual books). I can’t choose between them. I love all 3. But the first one listed is the one that started me on my journey, that introduced me to my Spirit:

    Ask and It Is Given
    A New Beginning I
    A New Beginning II

The following are more story-form with information mixed in, and in no particular order. I love them all, too. They all changed me in some way.

    Ramtha (The White Book)

Diary of a Psychic by Sonia Choquette

The Lightworker’s Way by Doreen Virtue

Opening to Channel by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer

    The Reconnection by Eric Pearl

You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay

Of the ones that you listed, Leonie, I also enjoyed very much The Camino and The Celestine Prophecy.

I look forward to reading The Mists of Avalon and possibly braving the Witches series, too! Thanks for the recommendations. :)

  52. Jennifer

I absolutely love this thread! Just wanted to add my vote for The Fifth Sacred Thing. It’s simply a must-read in my opinion, (which is how i feel about Mists of Avalon and The Red Tent, too!) can’t wait to add some of these wonderful suggestions to my list :)
    Blessings~

  53. Love for Gratitude | We Love Gratitude

[...] The Red Tent is hands-down one of the best books I’ve ever read. (Hat tip to Goddess Leonie for the recommendation!) 2. It talks about sacred circles of women, which have become so important [...]

  54. Martina

Wow, thank you so much for this list! So much inspiration!
I am about to read the Red Tent and have already ordered the MIsts (read it for the first time many years ago)
I am only starting on spiritual novels, so I do not have recommendations to share ….
    Love,
    Martina

  55. Stephanie

A delicious mix of novels and non-fiction here that I’m adding to my book list. I would add the wonderful books (fiction or non-fiction? You decide) by Lynn Andrews, starting with Medicine Woman, through The Woman of Wyrrd. I really loved Jaguar Woman especially, about the sacredness of relationships and honoring the feminine and masculine energies. The series is about a white woman’s initiation into the world of Native American shamanism when she meets a medicine woman named Agnes Whistling Elk and eventually becomes part of a powerful circle of women shamans from around the world. Her encounters with her nemesis, the sorcerer Red Dog, are riveting. Reading her first book coincided with my immersion into Native American shamanic work. I need to reread them! Thanks for all the great suggestions.

  56. Lorra

    Haven’t added my 2 cents in a while :)

I read sooooo much, but here are my faves:

    1. Loving What Is – Byron Katie. I’ve read ALL of her books, and this is the first of them. The other of hers that I strongly suggest is “I Need Your Love – Is it True?” – brilliant stuff, all of it.
    2. The Four Agreements, which has been mentioned.
    3. Ishmael, also mentioned already.
    4. Pronoia – Rob Brezsny – so fabulous.
    5. Ask and it is Given – mentioned already, but still worth mentioning.
    6. The Anastasia/Ringing Cedars Series – Vladimir Megre – if you ladies don’t know these books, LOOK THEM UP NOW! They are SCREAMING for you to read them – they’re perfect for all of you. There are 9 of them.
    7. I am an Emotional Creature – Eve Ensler – this is centered on young women, but I don’t think it matters how old you are – it will speak to you. This was my absolute favourite book of last year. All of Ensler’s books are fabulous, but this one, and Insecure at Last, were my faves. The Vagina Monologues were good, but these ones were better. The Good Body is a gem as well.
    8. Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of Horses – wonderful books. I couldn’t get through the third, it was like soft porn.
    9. Dangerous Angels – Francesca Lia Block – this is a YA novel collection, but worth every second. I just reread it – I’m 33, and it still sung to me. Magical.
    10. The Invitation – Oriah – or any of her books. Beautiful stuff!
    11. The Monstrous Regiment – Storm Constantine (I love all her books but this is very female-empowered) – there is also a sequel called Aleph.
    12. Spilling Open – Sabrina Ward Harrison. Beloved book, this one. All of her books are beautiful and thrilling.
    13. The Wanderground – Sally Miller Gearheart
    14. The Fifth Sacred Thing – Starhawk – already mentioned, but very good.
    15. Seventeen Ways to Eat a Mango – Joshua Kadison
    16. Da Energi – Paul Williams

I dunno if all of these count as spiritual, but most do. If you get any of them, I’d suggest the Byron Katie ones and Anastasia.

  57. Lorra

Also should mention Courage by Osho – really good.

  58. Becky

My absolute favorite spiritual novels are The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, and Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. The Alchemist was given to me by a friend and it is one of the most inspirational novels I’ve ever read, besides The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. The Alchemist is written in a poetic, fairy-tale like style, but packed full of day-to-day wisdom and optimism. LOVE it.

  59. MagicRainbowDreamings

    Hello lovelies,

    * well, OF COURSE, Joshua Kadison, 17 Ways To Eat A Mango ;o))

    * books by Joseph Marshall III, a Lakota Native, on the traditions & values of the Lakota; great book on Crazy Horse and the lessons we can learn from him

    * Byron Katie, Loving What Is (…she simply rocks! The basics of her Work can also be found for free on her website & blog

    * William Paul Young, The Shack (… deep)

    * Neil Donald Walsch, Conversations With God (just recently read for the first time, and will re-read again, still so much to take in, … deep, deep, deep … great!)

    * Paulo Coelho, Brida

    Novels:
    * Cecelia Ahern, … any of her books … true enough, they are quite romantic and an easy read but most of all, they all have a magical, spiritual twist to their stories. It is this magic, I totally love about her books. She’s the only author I know of so far, who weaves a magical, mystical element into an ordinary, everyday life … in fact, she intertwines them in such a charming way, that I usually read her novels in 1 go, ok, sometimes 2 goes… so delicious and surprising elements, only, then I’m sorry the book is over so fast ;o( * teehee*
Let me be honest: these novels are soul food to me ;o))
With Magically Sparkling Rainbow Blessings to all,
    Nicky

  60. Whitney

There are so many great suggestions here! I just wanted to add one that’s also a great movie: The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. It’s about a teenage girl in the Southern USA, set during the civil rights movement, who runs away from home and lives with a group of black women. There she learns about beekeeping, her dead mother, and the feminine divine. It’s very beautiful.

  61. Friday Superfuel: Delicious Books | Coaching and Consulting for Creative Entrepreneurs

[...] heard first of Dan Millman’s Way of the Peaceful Warrior on Goddess Leonie’s blog. This story was captivating and fun. It reminded me of what I already knew in my heart, even if I [...]

  62. Joni

I highly recommend Expecting Adam by Martha Beck, one of the most miraculous stories I have ever read and at the top of my own personal list.

  63. nathalie

my first life changing book was Anna and Mr God by Finn where the spiritual truth comes from the conversations of a little girl with a father figure, really moving.

  64. Jeanelle

I HIGHLY recommed (as someone who would also recommend the Celestine Prophesy and Mutant Message) a series of books (9 total) called the Ringing Cedars. AMAZING!!!! LIFE CHANGING!!!
