Thank you so much for this wonderful and inspirational website. I recently moved out of my parents home for the first time at age 25 (I never went away to college either, so this was a big shock to me). I started to get (again) panic attacks and general anxiety. I went back to therapy and with the help of my therapist, realized that I never learned how to self-soothe. I came upon this site and it has given me so much support and made me realize it is not just me who needs to learn self-love. I have always depended on others to fill this need for me, and I am only learning now how to do it for myself. Candles, tea, funny TV, cuddly blankets, and my boyfriend's T-shirt when he is not around are all things that help me cope on a day-to-day basis. Also working out and listening to music are very helpful to me. Thank you again, I wish you well!

Dear Leonie,

Thank you so much for this wonderful list and for the reminder to be kind to our own sweet selves. It is so important to listen to what we feel and to give our sensitive souls exactly what we need.

Take care of yourself darlin'..... as well as you take care of us!

Hugs,
Chris

ugh.

I had a burger that did not agree with me last night. And I was feeling sluggish so I didn't do art before bed.

and woke up from nighmares. parched.

about a gallon of water and some early morning dancing and a breakfast of yogurt and tea packed and ready to go have got my groove back.

so totally completely understand this.

(and I can't watch scary or violent movies either.)

Thank you for another beautiful and practical post, Leonie.

I too am very protective of myself, movie & tv-wise - I refuse to watch horror, war or crime, or anything that ridicules or belittles the spirit. (Which means I don't get to see a lot of tv these days lol!)

One thing I am not very good at is self-soothing. I've realised lately that I have very few tools to 'remove' myself from a spiralling negative mindset - particularly when it is people or outside criticism (implied or explicit) that I am worrying about. I do try things like meditatation, or having a shower, or changing what I'm doing - but the worries are very hard to transform. I often lapse very easily into 'mind-numbing' rather than transformational practices - watching tv, drinking a glass of wine, eating, or compulsive reading - anything to switch off the thoughts!

So, thank you for prioritising self-soothing! It has brought this to the forefront of my mind again - and given me some new things to try :)

Thanks, Leonie. That was just what I needed right now. I'm feeling a little sensitive myself this morning.

I've never really thought about ways to self-soothe but I can think of one or two things that help. Giving myself permission not to do anything can help, not to be so focused on achieving things. We all need time to mooch around in our pyjamas and stare out the window.

The other thing is working in my garden. Sometimes the best way to ground yourself is to do it literally, as you know.

In fact, I think I might do some weeding right now...
